Shelter delivers; ‘In-Custody Resettlement Services’ in all Resettlement Prisons in the North West. Delivering housing advice, housing support and legal services, to millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness

Interserve has commissioned Shelter as the Provider of ‘Through-the-Gate’ services and as the provider of ‘In-Custody Resettlement Services’.  In addition, Shelter deliver debt and employability advice within the prisons.

The Resettlement worker and Service User (SU) will co-produce a Resettlement Plan. This will inform both the delivery of targeted support to address housing needs, and appropriate referrals where access to other service provision is required to address wider needs, (e.g. health needs, employment needs). Through various support such as leasing with local authority about rent arrears, speaking with Landlords for those SU’s with short sentences, speaking to local hostels and by ensuring that addresses supplied upon release are a permanent residence.

Through Employability Workshops that Shelter are running in the prisons, SU’s receive help with; CV’s support, application support, interview techniques on how to dress, interview questions & answers, body language.  Employment within the prison develops transferrable skills and creates opportunities on release.

Peer Mentoring and Volunteering opportunities include current SU’s in the prison to become Mentors, providing positive role models to Service Users and supporting them with Debt advice; writing letters to debt companies, ringing and arranging re-payment plans etc..

Shelter continue their service within the community and former SU’s can continue to use their Information & Resource Centre, Free Helpline, or Website.
