Ken Skates on Jobs Growth Wales

Welsh Assembly Government

There is no doubt that the Jobs Growth Wales programme has been instrumental in reducing youth unemployment in Wales. There aren’t many youth employment programmes where 82% of young people in the private sector progress in to sustained employment or further learning after six months and as such I consider this programme to be one of the best in Europe.

Employers of all sizes have stated how well Jobs Growth Wales participants have progressed since taking up their six month opportunity and the difference that young people have made in helping them to expand their business. For many employers, Jobs Growth Wales was the catalyst to accelerated growth.

Jobs Growth Wales is about giving equal opportunities to all young people in Wales with the talent and the skills to do well at work. The supported strand of the programme offers young people, who may require additional support to overcome any personal barriers which have prevented them from getting or staying in work.

I am pleased to say that Jobs Growth Wales entered its third year in a very strong position, with the support of the European Social Fund. I am immensely proud of what we have achieved and I am very confident that the programme will continue to grow from strength to strength in the future.

As an employer, you can access full funding for salary costs at the national minimum wage and NI for six months when you employ a young person for at least 25 hours per week. We believe that tailored support is required for both employers and participants to make this programme a success. Even before a participant starts, we will steer you through the recruitment process, providing guidance and support for the first day of work and of course, providing on-going support.
