3SC Member’s Event – How to Improve your Bid Writing

Our scheduled 3SC Member’s event in April 2020, which was to be held in London, was postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions. 3SC decided to deliver one of the key sessions from that event via an online webinar on the 22nd July 2020 free of charge for all our 3SC members. The focus of the session was on how to improve your bid writing skills. It was delivered by Scott Keyser– The Writing Guy, who had delivered a short presentation on effective bid writing at our 3SC Member’s Event in Cardiff back in 2019. His presentation there proved to be such a huge success and was rated as excellent by attendees, so we got Scott to deliver another more in-depth presentation on the same theme.

The 90 minute session was called ‘Voice — the missing link in bids that win’ where Scott addressed two bid topics, ‘Content and Voice’, and how you create world-class content and convey it to the buyer in a human voice that resonates with them. Alongside the top tips and techniques on how to improve your bid writing, shared by Scott he also discussed the following:

  • Pain, Value and Price – the single biggest issue facing bidders in any sector is articulating the relationship between Pain, Value and Price (P-V-P). He called it the ‘golden thread’ and most bidders fail to bind it. He shared why he thinks that is and then shared his suggested solution of ‘Scott’s Secret Sauce’.
  • The subject of voice – despite several contributors to the document, how do you make your bid sing with one voice, that is clear, concise and compellingly human? This covered some of the writing techniques Scott uses to humanise complex or jargony content.

Scott has written an article for this newsletter on ‘A major problem in bid writing: nounitis’ which we encourage you to read for some more useful tips.

The well attended webinar was a great success with interesting questions at the Q&A session. The feedback we have received has been again excellent. Due to this success we have already started planning for the next members event which will take place on 30th September 2020. The session will focus on how to build mental toughness and resilience during times of uncertainty and how it adds great value to your people and organisations.
