Make a Plan – A Client Poem

Client ‘J’ has been working with our coach Brenda Houghton on our West Midlands Probation Programme. When J first joined coaching, he would often sit quietly, struggling to express himself. Now, he’s using poetry to communicate his thoughts and experiences — and this piece, “Make a Plan for Recovery,” is a testament to how far he’s come.
J has submitted this piece as part of a poetry competition being run by probation — a brilliant initiative that’s already having a positive impact.
Brenda says:
“The repeated line “make a plan” gives the poem a rhythm that’s both grounding and motivational. It’s something I believe will resonate with many people, especially those navigating recovery, change, or the early stages of probation.
What makes this poem so special is the journey behind it. “
Make a Plan for Recovery
(Written by J, shared with permission)
Recovery is a long road,
but a journey you need to take.
Don’t just step out,
make a plan.
Where do you want to go?
What route will you take?
It won’t be easy,
make a plan.
Don’t go alone,
take someone with you.
Share the journey,
make a plan.
Recovery has started,
you are on the path.
What do you do next?
Make a plan.
The path to recovery is uneven,
you have to watch your step.
See where you need to go,
make a plan.
The goal is in sight,
don’t give up now.
Let yourself smile,
but don’t forget —
make a plan!
