Before engaging in coaching, the client was facing significant mental health challenges. They struggled with persistent low mood and anxiety, particularly when leaving the house, often returning home shortly after due to overwhelming distress. Their history included three suicide attempts—one during school years, another later on, and a third on New Year’s Eve. Although their GP was aware and had prescribed medication, the client continued to feel isolated and fearful, especially when alone.
Living with their mother, who encouraged them to seek employment, the client felt pressured and anxious about their future. They had briefly worked in carpentry but left after one month due to dissatisfaction. Receiving Universal Credit added another layer of stress, as they feared losing financial support if unable to meet work requirements.
Despite having close friends, the client kept their suicidal thoughts private, describing them as “too personal” to share.
Over the course of six coaching sessions, the client made remarkable progress. They reconnected with the practice of thought journaling, which helped them reflect on their emotional patterns and identify triggers for bad days. This self-awareness became a foundation for change.
They also embraced positive self-talk, learning to be kinder to themselves and break free from unproductive thought loops. Using a mirror to practice speaking kindly to themselves—“like speaking to a friend”—proved to be a powerful tool for building self-compassion.
The client began engaging in productive and fulfilling activities, such as playing guitar and drawing, which helped them use their time more wisely and positively. They also learned the importance of rewarding themselves for small wins, which reinforced their motivation and sense of achievement.
Recently, the client took a significant step by visiting a local bar with their mother to inquire about a job opportunity. They are now waiting for a follow-up call and plan to reach out again later this week. This proactive approach marks a major milestone in their journey, and they expressed gratitude for their mother’s support during this moment.
The client shared that they now feel more positive about life and have a better outlook overall. While they still experience discomfort when leaving the house, they feel more confident and less nervous thanks to the welcoming and calming nature of the coaching sessions.
“The small tweaks we made each week have really helped me feel better about myself, and that’s been a good start.”
Looking ahead, the client is focused on building a future that aligns with their passions. They understand the importance of working and putting effort into their goals. One of their long-term ambitions is to create a YouTube or social media channel, turning their creativity into a source of income and personal fulfillment.
This case study highlights the transformative power of coaching in supporting individuals through mental health challenges. With compassionate guidance, practical tools, and consistent encouragement, the client has moved from a place of fear and uncertainty to one of hope, self-belief, and forward momentum.
