Background: The Client’s Situation Before Coaching
When the client first engaged in neurodiversity and wellbeing coaching, they were navigating a period of significant emotional difficulty. Their mental health was fragile, marked by persistent low mood and ongoing anxiety that affected daily functioning. Leaving the house often triggered overwhelming anxiety, leading them to return home shortly after setting out.
The client also disclosed a history of suicidal thoughts and impulsive behaviour, including three previous suicide attempts one during school years, another at a later stage, and a third on New Year’s Eve. Their GP was aware of these challenges, and they had previously been prescribed medication.
A strong fear of being alone shaped much of their daily life. They felt safest when with close friends, though they kept their deepest struggles private, describing suicidal thoughts as “too personal” to share. At home, they lived with their mother, who encouraged them to find work. Although well intentioned, this added pressure contributed to the client’s anxiety, particularly around Universal Credit requirements and the fear of payments being stopped.
They had briefly worked in carpentry but left after a month, feeling unhappy and disconnected from the role. By the time coaching began, the client felt stuck, overwhelmed, and unsure how to move forward.
Skills Developed Through Coaching
Over the course of six sessions, the client engaged deeply with the coaching process and began building practical, sustainable strategies to support their wellbeing.
1. Thought Journalling
The client rediscovered the value of thought journalling something they had used in the past but forgotten. Reintroducing this tool helped them reflect on patterns, understand triggers for difficult days, and identify what supports them during better ones. This reflective practice became a cornerstone of their progress.
2. Positive Self Talk and Self Compassion
A major shift occurred in how the client spoke to themselves. They learned to interrupt unhelpful thought loops and replace them with kinder, more constructive internal dialogue. Using a mirror to practise speaking to themselves as they would to a friend became a surprisingly powerful technique, helping them build confidence and emotional resilience.
3. Productive and Meaningful Use of Time
The client began choosing activities that nurtured their wellbeing playing guitar, drawing, and engaging in hobbies that brought a sense of purpose. They described this as “spending my time wisely,” a meaningful change from earlier patterns of avoidance or rumination.
4. Rewarding Progress
They embraced the idea of acknowledging small wins each day. Celebrating positive steps helped reinforce motivation and built a sense of pride in their own growth.
Current Position
A significant milestone came when the client visited a local bar with their mother to express interest in a job. They are now awaiting a call back and plan to follow up proactively. This step required courage, and the client recognised the importance of having their mother’s support during the visit.
They described this as a “big step,” reflecting both progress in confidence and a growing willingness to engage with opportunities outside the home.
How the Client Feels Now
The client reports feeling “a lot more positive” about life. The small, consistent adjustments made each week have helped them build a healthier relationship with themselves. While they still experience discomfort being outside the house, they feel more hopeful and grounded than before.
They also shared that the coaching environment helped reduce their nerves, describing the sessions as welcoming and calming.
Client Feedback
The client expressed that they now have a better outlook on life and genuinely feel more positive. They highlighted the supportive nature of the sessions, noting that they felt understood and less anxious during the coaching process.
Long Term Plans
Looking ahead, the client has a clearer sense of direction. They recognise the importance of working and investing effort into their future goals. One of their aspirations is to build a YouTube or social media channel an avenue that aligns with their interests and desire for creative independence.
They now understand that progress involves both pursuing passions and taking practical steps toward stability.
Conclusion
This case study illustrates how wellbeing coaching can create meaningful change through small, manageable shifts. By focusing on self awareness, self compassion, and practical strategies, the client moved from a place of fear and overwhelm to one of hope, agency, and forward momentum.
Their journey is a testament to the power of supportive coaching, personalised tools, and the courage to take one step at a time.
