Client’s Situation Before Coaching
When the client first began coaching, life felt heavy and uncertain. After losing both his grandad and his mum, he withdrew into himself. Conversations became difficult, and he often waited for others to speak first. He described himself as shy, introverted, and unsure of who he was becoming.
Although he wanted to get out more, make friends, and eventually find work, he didn’t believe those things were possible. Confidence was low, motivation was inconsistent, and staying at home felt safer than facing the world. Deep down, he wanted a job and a sense of purpose, but he didn’t think he had it in him.
Coaching became the space where he could slowly rebuild belief in himself.
Skills Developed Through Coaching
Over time, coaching helped him rediscover his voice and his confidence. Several key skills began to grow:
1. Improved Communication
He learned to start conversations instead of waiting for others. After social interactions, he began asking himself, “Was that as bad as I thought?” and almost always realised it wasn’t. This simple reflection helped reduce anxiety and build self trust.
2. Building Positive Routines
He developed daily habits that supported his wellbeing:
- Listening to music in the morning
- Motivational sports podcasts
- Playing rugby
- Birdwatching and keeping a bird journal
- Writing about life when he could
Birdwatching became especially important. It grounded him, gave him something to look forward to, and helped him stay positive about the next day.
3. Rewarding Himself
He learned to celebrate small wins washing his bike, planning something enjoyable for the weekend, or simply recognising when he’d done something brave. These rewards helped him feel proud of himself.
4. Growing Confidence Through Action
One standout moment happened early in his new job. A colleague couldn’t find something, and he stepped in to help. The confidence he felt in that moment showed him he was more capable than he realised.
Current Position
Today, he is working something he once believed was out of reach.
A recent highlight was when two rugby players he watches on Fridays came into the shop. They asked where the mushrooms were, and he helped them without feeling nervous. Moments like this reinforce that he belongs in the workplace and can handle interactions that once felt overwhelming.
He has also been contacted by Rutland Park, who plan to reach out when a suitable job becomes available. This possibility excites him and gives him something to work toward.
How He Feels Now
He describes feeling hopeful and moving in the right direction. Instead of looking backwards, he’s looking forward. He recognises that he now has a growth mindset.
He still wants to improve his communication skills especially having longer conversations with friends and trusted people. He’s also interested in trying new clubs to meet more people. Each step builds confidence.
Feedback on Coaching
He credits coaching with giving him structure, purpose, and encouragement. The actions set every two weeks helped him stay motivated and try new things.
Coaching also strengthened his relationships. He now talks more openly with his dad, rebuilding a connection that had been difficult since losing his mum and grandad. Their relationship is better than it has ever been.
He has also reconnected with his gran’s sister, calling her once or twice a week something he never would have done before. Staying connected now feels good rather than scary.
Long Term Plans
He has several meaningful goals for the future:
- Working at Rutland Water
- Possibly becoming a logistics officer in the RAF
- Finding a job that gives him pride and routine
- Learning to drive and becoming independent
He is already taking driving lessons, practising on the app, and preparing for his theory test. His goal is to be driving by Easter 2026.
Most importantly, he now believes these goals are achievable. Coaching helped him shift from “I can’t do that” to “I can do it.”
Conclusion
This client’s journey shows how coaching can create real, lasting change. Through consistent support, practical strategies, and a safe space to grow, he rebuilt his confidence, strengthened relationships, developed new routines, and stepped into the world of work something he once thought was impossible.
His story is a powerful reminder that with the right support, small steps can lead to life changing progress.
