Supporting neurodivergent employees isn’t simply about offering adjustments it’s about empowering individuals to understand themselves, advocate for their needs, and thrive in environments that may not have been designed with them in mind. This case study explores how neurodiversity strategy coaching helped one participant, recently diagnosed with ADHD, move from burnout and self doubt to confidence, leadership, and authentic connection at work.

When the participant began coaching, they were navigating a perfect storm of challenges. A recent ADHD diagnosis had brought clarity but also uncertainty. At the same time, they were placed on a project outside their area of experience one with a high volume of tasks and responsibilities that demanded constant juggling.

The result was a familiar neurodivergent experience:

  • Persistent overwhelm
  • Burnout
  • Difficulty balancing competing priorities
  • A deep sense of imposter syndrome
  • Eroding confidence

They felt as though they were always doing something wrong, and the pressure to mask their struggles only intensified the emotional load.

Neurodiversity strategy coaching created a space where the participant could explore their challenges without judgment and begin reframing their internal narrative. Over time, they developed several key skills and insights:

1. Self Acceptance

Instead of interpreting differences as flaws, they learned to recognise that their brain simply works differently and that this difference brings strengths as well as challenges.

2. Strength Awareness

Coaching helped them identify the unique value they bring to their team, shifting the focus from perceived weaknesses to genuine capabilities.

3. Self Advocacy

They learned how to articulate their needs, set boundaries, and communicate in ways that support their wellbeing and performance.

4. Pattern Recognition

With sessions spaced out over time, they were able to observe recurring themes, test strategies, and build sustainable habits.

The transformation has been significant. The participant is now taking on more leadership tasks something they had hoped for but previously doubted they were ready to pursue. Their increased confidence is visible to colleagues, who now actively select them for projects and responsibilities.

They’ve also developed strong working relationships and feel able to “unmask” more often, building authentic connections without fear of repercussions. This sense of psychological safety has been a major contributor to their improved wellbeing and performance.

The participant describes feeling more at peace with themselves. They no longer hold themselves to impossible standards of perfection and instead recognise that their skillset has a meaningful place in the organisation.

Their confidence has grown, and they feel optimistic about their future development. Rather than bracing for burnout, they’re looking forward to building on the strategies they’ve learned and continuing to grow professionally.

The participant was offered both CBT and workplace coaching. While both were intended to provide support, they found the coaching significantly more impactful.

They highlighted several reasons for this:

  • A safe, non judgmental environment where they could openly discuss challenges
  • More spaced out sessions, allowing time for reflection, pattern spotting, and real world application
  • A balance of acceptance and practical solutions, which helped them move forward rather than simply analyse problems

They described coaching as the intervention that truly helped them understand themselves and make meaningful changes.

Looking ahead, the participant intends to continue applying the strategies they’ve learned, building on their strengths, and developing their professional capabilities. With a renewed sense of confidence and clarity, they feel equipped to navigate future challenges and pursue opportunities that align with their goals.

This case study demonstrates the profound impact neurodiversity strategy coaching can have not only in improving workplace performance but in fostering self acceptance, confidence, and authentic connection. For this participant, coaching provided the tools and space needed to move from overwhelm to empowerment, unlocking both personal and professional growth.
